We would have to depend less on countries that don't like us. That's a big one. They have some power over us as long as we continue to get oil from them.
Lets face it, it would be better for the environment. We would be able to use cleaner forms of energy for powering our automobiles.
This is tied to the first one, but it would most likely improve our national security. We won't be giving money to countries like Saudi Arabia who sponsors terrorist groups. The large and vulnerable infrastructure that we have for oil would no longer be a huge target for potential terrorist attacks either.

Poor billtucker67 needs to reread his history. Proportionally, Canada has had devestating losses per capita in both WW1 %26amp; WW2. In case he was sleeping in his history classes, Canada joined WW1 in 1914, and WW2 in 1939, or maybe Americans, in their xenophobic history classes don't learn about other countries. In more recent decades, Canada has had a proud history of the armed forces being involved in peacekeeping, not warmongering.
I am appalled that anyone would expect the US to be the world police force. That's almost like letting the foxes into the proverbial henhouse.
As for the oil, as a citizen of oil-rich Alberta, I would be thrilled if the US would pay lots and lots and lots of money for our oil, and keep its nose out of the rest of our business. Goodness only knows that many Americans are woefully and proudly ignorant of not only Canada, but also the rest of the planet.
As a Canadian looking down upon the United states and their egotistical view on the rest of the world, I would have to say that the US is certainly not fair in how it treats others. They treat Canada as though it is simply another state, and yet we surpass the US in land mass. We supply the US with electrical power, softwood lumber, oil, gas, etc. we help them fight their wars, and still they take a ';holier than thou'; attitude with everyone. The Bush administration has corrupted the government, brainwashed its people into thinking that this ';war on terror'; was justified... when it wasn't. When they lost Bin Ladens trail, they turned to Saddam Hussein, and started a war that did not have to occur. Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction. Given our present consumption and sources for oil, no. Our economy would collapse (okay, major disarray) without foreign oil.
We could open up all our reserves and allow more offshore drilling and could probably make up the shortfall but we would expend our own oil relatively quickly and then would have to import even more of our oil.
Finally, if we came up with a comprehensive plan to reduce our need for oil we could graduall ween ourselves from foreign oil. That would be the best course of action.
Oil independence would help us survive also by making us more objective in foreign policy and reduce the conflicts that we need to get involved in.

But as for your original question- Yes it is possible, but not for a while. There are plenty of places in the US where oil can be drilled. We need to get these oil fields up and running at full capacity. As a kid I remember driving through Western Colorado, there were miles and miles of oil rigs- seems like they were still working at that point. I remember driving other places in the US and seeing oil rigs working. Now you don't see them anymore and if you do, they are not working, they are still and rusty. We need to reopen these oil fields and start producing our own oil. I believe that there is enough oil in the US to keep us going, we just have to start drilling for it.
I don't know that we can entirely cutoff our dependence on foreign oil right now, but give us several months to get us up and running to full capacity and get some reserves, then we can cut off our foreign oil. Who knows- that may even shut down terrorist organizations- because many of them get their funding from oil. It really is not good for us to be completely dependent on ANYTHING foreign. That does not mean that we should cut off all foreign trade- just make sure that we can depend on America's supplies.
So Yes I believe that we can survive without foreign oil- it will just take some time to get there.

It will take time, however we are getting the alternate fuels, and the cars with improved mileage are getting here, it is still not so well coordinated, however we are all very much aware that there are problems with getting enough oil. Instead of trying to fix the blame, it is much more important to focus on new fuels and Cars that are Green Line. There is much more we can do, and as I find ,are already doing, when I was at the Mall, the AC was not on, and the entrance doors were open, for the fresh air to come in! Surprise! We make our trips count, and I do see less cars during day everywhere I go. Biking during good weather is better for our health, and walking is as well, in order to save on fuel. WE are an Ingenious peoples here, I personally think we will make it. I appreciate the view Kia's Sister has from her travels through the Country.

In this provision, America鈥檚 largest energy companies鈥攁mong the most profitable in the U.S. economy鈥攚ould succeed in reclassifying energy production as a manufactured good in order to qualify for potentially tens of billions of dollars in new tax deductions. The manufacturing tax deduction has previously only been available to traditional manufacturing industries. The amount of the tax deduction is 3% of a company鈥檚 production income in 2005 and 2006; rising to 6% in 2007-2009, and 9% after 2009.

That is true for the most part. The president can not directly control gas prices. In the long term a president maybe able to exert a minimal amount of influence by pressuring congress to enact tarriffs against oil imports, but that is a rare occurance and takes years to accomplish.
Gas prices are higher than they normally are in the U.S. but if you compare prices internationally, the price we pay is very low. In Europe and the UK it is not unusual to pay the equivilent of $5.00-6.00 per gallon.
As a result of this Americans drive a lot more than their European counterparts. So yes, it is a supply and demand issue.

My mom heard from a radio program that our top supplier is Mexico, and that the second is Canada. Rig counts have dropped off more than 50 percent since the end of August. Natural gas prices determine drilling and prices are very low right now. High oil prices should stabilize drilling but it wont increase drilling much. We have huge amounts of natural gas in storage and it usually increases in the summer months. With huge inventories and a weak economy I dont see prices or drilling picking up significantly for a year or two. I grew up around the drilling business in several different states. So I can understand how you feel. Its always been a cyclical business. Busts happen about once a decade. It happened in the 60s, 80s and 90s. It skipped the 70s because the embargos and shortages kept prices up. We paid for it in the 80s with one of the worst busts. Some people, who had worked in the oilfield for decades left the business never to work in it again in their careers. And some of the largest and oldest drilling companies went out of business. This bust is the worst since then. It has nothing to do with fields being exhausted. Its a simple supply and demand relationship. Enhanced drilling and recovery methods keep old fields producing and new fields producing more. That and high prices in the recent past are why we have such huge supplies now. And geologists are constantly sifting through old well logs of dry holes to see if they missed something. Environmentalists have more to do with it, not allowing drilling in places like the Wyoming Range and other places. Drilling isnt dead, its just going through a normal cycle..Does anyone know if the oil business in the united states is going to get better?
Certainly oil is going to be a sure fire money maker for the foreseeable future in spite of the present downturn. My only concern would be that as easy fields are exhausted your husband might have to move to tar sand, off-shore or polar fields.
There is a need to reduce reliance on oil because it is becoming more expensive to extract (as easy fields dry up) and for climate change reasons but oil has so many vital uses employment prospects should remain good.

Sure. Things are slow now because oil is down on the world market. It is increasing day by day, it hit $71.00 today. When Israel attacks Iran, and we attack North Korea, oil prices will surge and those in the oil industry will see a positive benefit.

Rail is 10 more efficient than auto transportation and 40 times more efficient than air trasportaion. France has much larger portion of power generation based on nuclear about 40% if I recall correctly.
Gasoline is heavily taxed in Europe so Europeans tend to not use nearly so much. Very few SUV's there.
If there is a crunch, the U S might very well collapse from the crunch. Do you have any idea how many people commute to work each day over 50 miles each way. It is millions.

The US currently imports more than they export so the US could ramp up production of items it used to make but now import.

He is against harming our environment when it isn't really necessary. There is a reason for the ban on Off-shore drilling. McCain was always against it until he started running for president. He admits it won't help much and said it will have a psychological effect on the American people. McCain not only voted against Off-Shore drilling but voted against a Bill that would ensure that if the Ban was lifted, the oil would stay in America.

We have enough oil already available to drill without going off shore, or on protected land. Our military's number one goal is to get as much oil as we can. It's called ';point of balance.'; The high prices we are paying is just to get people mad enough to want to drill on protected land and sea. It's all about BIG profits. The oil company's made 38 BILLION dollars profit last year. You are being fooled by some very top notch people who work for the oil companies.

A big part of the run-up in the price of oil is the fact that the US has no energy policy at all. Other then a moronic ethanol mandate. If the speculators were given some sense that the US is actually going to do something to curb our reliance on foreign oil, it would have an immediate and profound effect on the price of oil. The price of a barrel of oil is not based on what it costs to produce. It is based upon how much people are willing to pay. If it became apparent that the US was no longer willing to pay $100 for a barrel of oil, and that we were actually going to do something about it, besides just complain, it would have an immediate effect upon the price of oil. Ideally, we not only need to start drilling for oil wherever feasible, but we need a realistic alternative fuels policy. That means wind, solar, and nuclear. This is a White House organization saying this- not an environmental group. I think we should not be investing in domestic oil production. Rather we should be using clean alternate energy. It reduces pollution, and more importantly, lasts longer (more permanent than oil)-- even if it takes a while to make, we should be more dependent on alternate energy, within the next 20 years to say the least, than with oil. Mike, refineries are built when you have your own oil to to refine. Depending on imported oil from OPEC that is priced by them to maximize their gain makes refining a risky uneconomic proposition. It has nothing to do withe ecological concerns or finding new oil in the US in the short term. You and everyone else needs to understand who controls the price of oil-certainly not even the toadies working for US OILCO's who settle for the crumbs from OPEC's table. The OIL in the SPR is ours and could be used to supply a new modern refinery but other refiners would balk at the exclusivity of the idea. Even then OPEC will eventually own it when SPR oil runs out and no new non-OPEC sources are found! We should be finding ways of reducing energy through conservation by efficiency improvements and finding ways to reduce reliance on OPEC OIL or other carbon-energy sources from our self-serving fat and greedy OILCO's who benefit from the situation (pls notice I did not say oil shortage or scarcity!)

It has been decades, but there are plans to build new ones. There is a proposed refinery to be built in South Dakota, to refine oil pumped from Alaska and Canada. There is still a big debate in the state about it, though not much with environmental issues, but political ones.

It has been decades, but there are plans to build new ones. There is a proposed refinery to be built in South Dakota, to refine oil pumped from Alaska and Canada. There is still a big debate in the state about it, though not much with environmental issues, but political ones.
not sure been way to long though.
flatfoot it's not because of the profits that they haven't built a new one. it has more to do with the EPA than profits. it is from all the rules and regulations, and the fact that it is almost impossible to get the authorization needed to build.

If The united states stop buying oil from russia I need to find an argument that says this is actually A good thing. The US is not buying much directly from Russia. They are mostly delivering to Europe. The US doesn't buy any from Iran and it has no impact. What we do not buy is going to be picked up on the open market one way or the other. The only ';good'; thing that would come of a boycott is that it would make a politician feel better.

How can I (a Unites States citizen) purchase olive oil futures contracts? Or bet on olive oil in general?
I believe that olive oil distributors and producers will do well in the future. I am a US citizen, and I would like to capitalize on this belief. The most direct possibility is to buy olive oil futures, but they appear to only be traded in Spain, and I don't know how to do it as a US citizen. Alternatively, perhaps there are individual stocks (US or foreign) that I could purchase. Consider importing Olive Oil and creating your own brand. I love the stuff, but don't see any US traded commodities. You could also hit the supermarket and copy down all the brand names. Then look for companies that have Olive Oil as the major product.windows web server
