Why can't we drill for oil around the United States and not be so dependent on others?

We have oil under the U.S. so why don't we drill for it and make our refineries here like overseas and not have to be held hostage for oil.Why can't we drill for oil around the United States and not be so dependent on others?
The environmentalist groups are way too strong in this country to allow massive oil drilling to occur. Why can't we drill for oil around the United States and not be so dependent on others?
Let us in on your little secret about oil in the US. Where? The continental US is about tapped out. None in Hawaii and Alaska is being worked. Any more brain farts??
Ask the environmentalists! It is through their lobbying in Washington D.C. that much of the exploration in the U.S. has been stifled. Anwar is the most recent example. Here's an analogy that reveals how much impact drilling for oil in Anwar would affect that area. Take a 9 foot by 12 foot rug and let it represent Anwar. Then take a postage stamp and place it in the center of the rug. The postage stamp represents the area that would be affected by drilling for oil.

It's the environmentalist movement that has kept this country so weak and dependent on foreign oil. If this pisses you off as much as it does me, let your congressman know!!
I hear our biggest solution to that problem could be in Canada. Canada contains one of the largest oil sand deposits in the world. The process to get the oil from the sand is relatively simple and could solve our MidEast problem in the future. Dealing with Canada would be much easier and probably more cost effective. I hear this type of oil is the more desirable oil too. I believe it is light sweet crude oil. The best kind. Its probably not the total solution, but I hear its on the way and it is good.
Oil is available throughout much of the US.

I grew up during a period when there were small oil wells throughout much of the farm land of Ohio.

This was dropped in favor of the ease of large deposits elsewhere. The small wells in OH were not up to having a pipeline, the companies went around with a truck collecting from people. This has not been a cost efficient as buying it overseas and having it shipped in huge tankers.

But, as the price of oil goes up, it's going to be more likely that theses small time producers are going to make enough money to be able to afford to keep the wells running again.
Oil isn't everywhere. It's not like you can drill a hole in your back yard and find an oil patch... it's not cabbage, you know?
because:

(1)the oil companies are NOTORIOUS for their nasty environmental practices around the world

(2)the US made some DUMB political decisions in the past and now we're paying for it.
Because of the eco terrorist that keep the US for drilling for oil.
Because the Large Oil Companies dont make enough money off of us, so they sell it overseas.

Alaska is a fine example. They made the pipe line, (Government money for a lot of it), and they drill in Alaska and not a DROP of it is for the USA! It ALL goes to JAPAN!

So, I could care less if they do drill in the USA, and if they do, drill on Government Land, they should pay a huge price to the Government, and not get it for FREE!!!

WE OWN THAT LAND, NOT THE OIL COMPANIES!

SO, WE SHOULD GET THE PROFITS AND BENEFIETS FROM IT!

I wish you well..

Jesse
Your constanly trying to find new oil in your land, but it has been proven that the middle east has the most oil and natural gas in the world, damn!!!
Oil isnt every where, not to mention the capitle to drill for it is extensive. Most oil is offshore anyway, and the US is slowly turning to offshore oil to relieve us from foriegn oil.
WE ALREADY DO.

BUT THE US OIL ISNT ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE PEOPLE IN the us.

SO THEY DRILL OIL FROM THE MIDDLE EAST AND STUFF.
our oil sucks
